The book starts out with Charity sitting in the back of an ambulance, which is where the kidnapping is taking place. In the ambulance she talks with a servant of the kidnappers, Dessi, and sorta becomes his friend. She learns that there are multiple people behind the job; including Dr. M. Reyes and even her own butler Albert. Her father talks to the criminals and they work out a plan to get the ransom and the daughter exchanged. Mr. Meyers owns a helicopter and is told to fly the currency over to a lake where his daughter is placed, but the weather is bad and the helicopter crashes into the lake and her father dies. Instead they tell her mother, "We are now following plan B." (166). As plan B unfolds, readers learn that people aren't who we actually thought they were and surprises are thrown into the loop. And the real question is thrown out, "Who is Dr. M. Reyes?"
